CNOOC (HKG:0883, SHA:600938) said it unlocked an ultra-shallow gas play in the western portion of the South China Sea, according to a Thursday press release by the state oil and gas giant.

The Lingshui 36-1 gas field has a depth of 1,500 meters and can produce up to 10 million cubic meters of open flow natural gas daily, CNOOC said.

The discovery helps unleash further the trillion-cubic-meter gas reserves of the South China Sea, the company said.
