Given the small number of high-frequency dividend/distribution options, comparing them is challenging. \nThat's where Livewire comes in. As part of our 2024 Income Series, we decided to hunt down these income unicorns and analyse the 5-year, 3-year, and 1-year performance numbers (where available) and their fees. \nBefore we dive in, a couple of notes: This data was difficult to gather, and despite my best efforts, I may have missed some constituents. Unless otherwise specified, all performance data is up until the end of Q1 2024.\nHigh-level insights\n\nThere are 14 monthly payers and 16 quarterly payers in the tables below\nGenerally speaking, the quarterly payers have better returns than the monthly payers - although it should be noted that the quarterly payers are highly concentrated in equities, whilst the monthly payers are more evenly spread across equities, property, private credit, and bonds\nWhile equity-related products have typically delivered the strongest performance historically, if ever there was a time to remember that past performance is not a reliable indicator of future return, now would be it. They do this by aiming for a gross yield (adjusted for franking credits and after fees) above that provided by the S&P/ASX 300 Franking Credit Adjusted Daily Total Return Index (Tax-Exempt). EIGA is suited to investors who are seeking a greater level of income than that achieved by term deposits and can take full advantage of franking credits and share buybacks that the investments can provide.\n#2 - Switzer Dividend Growth (SWTZ)\nSWTZ is an income-focused exchange-traded managed fund, with a mix of yield and quality stocks. The objective of the fund is to generate an above-market yield while maximising franking where possible and to deliver capital growth over the long term. Security diversification is achieved by restricting the proportion invested in any one industry to 40% of the total ETF and 10% for any one company. Australian Real Estate Investment Trusts (A-REITS) are excluded from the index.\nThe product is suitable for 'buy and hold' investors seeking long-term capital growth, some tax-effective income, and for those who have a higher tolerance for the risks associated with share market volatility.\n#2 - Vanguard MSCI Australian Large Cap Companies Index (VLC)\nVanguard MSCI Australian Large Companies Index ETF seeks to track the return of the MSCI Australian Shares Large Cap Index before taking into account fees, expenses and tax.\nThe ETF provides low-cost, diversified exposure to the largest companies and property trusts listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. It offers potential long-term capital growth along with dividend income and franking credits.\n\nThis product is also suitable for 'buy and hold' investors seeking long-term capital growth, some tax-effective income, and for those who have a higher tolerance for the risks associated with share market volatility.\n#3 - iShares S&P/ASX 20 (ILC)\n\nThe fund aims to provide investors with the performance of the S&P/ASX 20 Accumulation Index, before fees and expenses. The index is designed to measure the performance of the 20 largest Australian securities listed on the ASX.\nThe product is likely to be appropriate for a consumer: who is seeking capital growth and/or income distribution, using the product for a minor allocation of their portfolio or less, with a minimum investment timeframe of five years, and with a high to very high risk/return profile.\nLooking ahead\nAs mentioned above, if ever there was a time to remember that past performance is not a reliable indicator of future return, now would be it. \nWith equity-related products playing a big part in these lists - particularly the quarterly payers - it's worth taking stock of where equity income sits historically.  \nAccording to Commsec, investors are expected to receive $32 billion in dividends between August and October this year. This sounds like a lot, and it is, but it would be down 24% from a year earlier\nOne significant reason for the drop is that the big miners—previously paying out historically high dividends—are reverting towards the longer-term averages. The miners enjoyed a Goldilocks period and, for a handful of years, were delivering gross dividend yields well beyond 10%. This is not normal—miners are cyclical, and a reversion to the mean would always happen.\nWhile 87% of ASX 200 companies are electing to pay dividends during the upcoming season, that’s about where the good news ends:\n\n\nMore of those companies have reduced payouts compared to a year ago.\nCompanies have been cutting dividend payout estimates at a clip not seen since 2009 (excluding the COVID-19 period).\nThe average dividend payout ratio among ASX 200 companies is near decade lows, at 62%.
