Analysts said that year-to-date, only 41% of active funds globally outperformed, with a median relative return of -0.68%.  “It has been difficult for funds to outperform market cap-weighted benchmarks, which have been driven by the strong performance of a few stocks with large index weights,” wrote Analyst Nigel Tupper. When considering market capitalization, the fund group with the best relative returns in May was small-cap, based on median one-month returns.  Small cap funds achieved about 0.1% relative return, compared to both large-cap and mid-cap funds, achieving -0.1%. Small cap funds also performed the best when measuring the last five months. They had the only positive relative return at 0.11% during the last three months, about -0.05% year-to-date, and almost -0.25% from the past six months.  Large caps funds, on the other hand, had almost -0.25% in relative returns for the past three months, and about -0.35% year-to-date and for the past six months.
