Rising optimism about Fed rate cuts this year also sparked the yield curve to steepen, though the short-term rates remain above long-term — in what’s dubbed an inverted curve.\nA key measure of underlying US inflation stepped down for a second month in May, giving Fed officials more confidence that high rates are dampening price pressures. The so-called core consumer price index — which excludes food and energy costs — rose at a year-over-year rate of 3.4% — cooling to the slowest pace in more than three years.\n“It feels like immaculate disinflation,” Frances Donald, global chief economist at Manulife Asset Management, said on Bloomberg Television. “We’ll take it as a win. It’s good news”\nPrior to the data, traders were turning neutral, with odds that US policymakers keep borrowing costs higher for longer overtaking optimism surrounding the dawn of the Fed’s easing cycle. That shift had gathered momentum since data last Friday offered evidence of a robust labor market. \nJust hours ahead of the Fed’s June policy announcement, however, a cooler-than-expected inflation print is resetting those expectations.
