Amazon.com (AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk's SpaceX, and United Launch Services, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin (LMT) and Boeing (BA) have been awarded up to $5.6 billion in Pentagon contracts for national security-related rocket launches, the Department of Defense said Thursday.

The Pentagon described the award as a firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery, and indefinite-quantity contract with a ceiling of $5.6 billion.

"The contract is for launch services delivering National Security Space payloads into their intended orbits," the Pentagon said. "The location of performance will be determined at the task-order level."

The contract extends to 2029, with an option to extend by five more years.

The Pentagon said it picked the three companies from seven bids submitted.
