Boeing's (BA) efforts to hire a new chief executive before year-end is taking more time than many expected, with several high-profile candidates turning down the opportunity, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Boeing executives previously have said they want to name a successor to current Boeing CEO David Calhoun by the end of June. The company did not immediately respond to a message from MT Newswires seeking comments.
GE Aerospace (GE) CEO Larry Culp, an early favorite for the job, and Carrier Global (CARR) boss David Gitlin have both passed on the job, the sources said. Other likely contenders such as Pat Shanahan, CEO of Spirit AeroSystems (SPR), or Boeing's sitting chief operating officer Stephanie Pope would first need to win over skeptics who think Boeing should select an outsider following its recent string of problems.
Still others involved in the selection process have their own criteria, the sources say, like a new CEO willing to move to the company's soon-to-be home Seattle, Washington, or someone with extensive engineering credentials.
