Wavering Tech Rally Pushes Exchange-Traded Funds Lower, Equity Futures Mixed Pre-Bell Friday

The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was down 0.1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was also 0.1% lower in Friday's premarket activity, amid a wavering tech rally as NVIDIA (NVDA) continues to post losses.

US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.01%, and Nasdaq futures retreating 0.03% before the start of regular trading.

The June PMI for US report from S&P Global will be released at 9:40 am ET, followed by the existing home sales bulletin for May at 10 am ET, along with Conference Board leading indicators for May.

The weekly EIA natural gas supplies report posts at 10:30 am ET, followed by the weekly Baker Hughes oil-and-gas rig count at 1 pm ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was down 1.6% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.7% lower.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) was flat. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT), the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH), and the iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) were inactive.

Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT) shares were up almost 37% in premarket activity on Friday after the company said overnight the US Food and Drug Administration approved the expansion of Elevidys to include patients ages 4 and above with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and a confirmed mutation in the DMD gene.

Winners and Losers:

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was down 0.2%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.2% higher.

Ryan Specialty (RYAN) was up 7% pre-bell Friday after S&P Dow Jones Indices said the company will join the S&P MidCap 400 before the equity market opens for trading on June 28.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was up by 0.1%.

NGL Energy Partners (NGL) shares were down nearly 5% before Friday's opening bell after the company said its general partner's board declared quarterly distributions for holders of its Class B, C, and D preferred units.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) retreated 0.3% and the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) was inactive, while the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) was also inactive.

Spirit AeroSystems (SPR) gained 4.6% before the opening bell after Reuters reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter, that Boeing (BA) is close to buying back its former subsidiary.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was flat, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was down 1.6%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) lost 0.3%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) were inactive.

CarMax (KMX) traded up 4.4% pre-bell after the company reported forecast-beating fiscal Q1 financial results.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.1%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.2% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) fell 1.5%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was 0.9% higher, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) lost 0.5%.

Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) was up nearly 1.4% in recent premarket activity after the company said it has reached a settlement with Molex regarding its patent infringement dispute and related litigation.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil lost 0.1% at $81.23 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was 1.5% lower at $2.70 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 0.2%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) fell 2.3%.

Gold futures for August were up 0.4% to $2,378.70 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures fell 0.9% to $30.87 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) advanced 0.3%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 0.5% lower.
