Stratasys (SSYS) and Ricoh USA said Wednesday the first patient has been enrolled in a clinical study aimed at assessing the use of 3D printed models for orthopedic oncology.

The study will evaluate the efficacy of patient-specific 3D printed anatomical models for preoperative planning and tumor excision, compared with the current standard of care, which relies only on CT or MRI, the companies said.

The study is expected to run for 12 months and involve up to 150 subjects across three sites, Stratasys and Ricoh said.

Stratasys shares were up 1.7% in recent trading.
