China Mobile (SHA:600941, HKG:941), China Telecom (SHA:601728, HKG:728) and China Unicom (HKG:762) are under investigation by the US Commerce Department over risks stemming from data exploitation, Reuters reported Monday, citing three people privy to the matter.
The investigations were undertaken amid concerns the companies will provide the data gathered through their US cloud and internet businesses to the Chinese government, according to the report.
The Commerce Department subpoenaed the state-backed companies and completed risk-based analyses of China Mobile and China Telecom, Reuters wrote. The probe on China Unicom is not as advanced as the other two.
China will continue to defend the rights and interests of Chinese companies, the news agency cited the Chinese Embassy in Washington as saying.
Meanwhile, Reuters did not find any evidence the companies intentionally provided sensitive US data to Beijing or committed other wrongdoings, the newswire said.
