Rubner, the firm’s global markets division managing director and tactical specialist, said in a Monday note that it was the “last bullish email” on U.S. equities that he would be sending out for now, following in part capitulation by the last standing market bears.  “I am so bullish after 34 new [all-time highs] that I am actually turning tactically bearish. The pain trade has shifted from the upside to the downside,” he said. The S&P 500 (SP500)(IVV)(SPY) and Nasdaq Composite (COMP:IND) each closed at new record highs on Friday. The indexes have gained 17% and 22% YTD, respectively.  “I am on correction watch,” Rubner said. Among his observations about stocks:   “I am modelling a late-summer equity market correction,” he said. Buyers are “full and running out of ammo,” and trading will soon become earnings and election hedging, he said. Running back to 1928, July 17th has marked the local top for the month heading into a materially lower August. August is the worst month of the year for equity flows. In H1 2024, equity ETF and mutual funds inflows in H1 were the second-largest on record, at $231B. Passive funds drew in +$436B. Passive inflows into target date and retirement funds have been a key pillar of the flow-of-funds move into equities. “This pauses a bit in August,” Rubner said. For the Russell 2000 (RTY) index of small-cap stocks, the first half of August since 1983, is the second-worst two-week period of the year. Systematic positioning is elevated and the earnings bar has been raised for the top 10 index weights, which have driven the bulk of the S&P 500’s (SP500) performance YTD. “A spike in volatility and misses from highly owned market capitalization weights may force nonfundamental sellers to reduce risk,” he said.  ETFs investors can monitor for stock-index moves include (RSP), (SSO), (DIA), (QQQ), and (IWM).
