Focusing on the semiconductor equipment part of the market, Citi analyst Atif Malik said the steep decline in stocks like Applied Materials (AMAT), Lam Research (LRCX) and KLA Corp. (KLAC) were likely due to the fact that ASML (NASDAQ:ASML) missed its guidance for the third-quarter, the comments by former President Trump about Taiwan and added worries about more severe export control curbs. However, chip equipment spending should not be impacted, as it sees $120B in its base case for 2025. Focus on the fundamentals Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya said yesterday's decline was the 26th time that the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index declined 5% or more in the past decade. And while the risks add to seasonal headwinds — with the index often underperforming in the third quarter — volatility is not new and the fundamentals are still intact. \"AI still the strongest and most dependable area of capex, driven by domestic US tech companies with solid balance sheets, proven monetization and mission-critical imperatives, our recent call with Broadcom (AVGO) management suggests a 3- 5 year planning window by top US cloud customers,\" Arya wrote in an investor note. \"However, outside of AI, global growth remains murky at best, shaking off post-pandemic excesses - global consumer is impacted by inflation and global conflicts, restraining any major PC/smartphone upgrade cycles, China demand remains weak, enterprise demand is sluggish, telco demand is weak, industrial demand is more inventory adjustments than a new capex cycle, while auto production is flattish with question marks on EV demand.\" As such, Arya said the recent rotation in semiconductor stocks is likely due more to positioning than anything fundamental related. Additionally, Arya said there is \"no substitute\" for Taiwan for at least the next five years, noting the global chip industry is \"critically dependent on a global supply chain.\" Nvidia (NVDA), Broadcom, Arm (ARM) are still Bank of America's favorite stocks in computing and AI, while KLA Corp. is its favorite in semiconductor equipment and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) and Analog Devices (ADI) are its favorites in automotive and industrials.
