Market Chatter: Amazon Faces 2nd Probe by Tax Authorities in Italy

MT Newswires Live07-27

Amazon (AMZN) is under investigation by tax authorities in Italy following routine checks on the US retailer, Reuters reported Friday, citing two sources with knowledge of the matter.

The inquiry is looking for unpaid custom duties and other potential violations of tax rules for goods traded in Italy, the sources told Reuters. The investigation started more than two years ago.

It is separate from another investigation disclosed Tuesday that saw prosecutors in Milan seize 121 million euros ($131.4 million) from the company's logistics unit Amazon Italia Transport for "a complex tax fraud" and illegal labor practices.

Amazon did not immediately respond to MT Newswires on Friday seeking comment on the second investigation.

After the funds seizure in Milan was announced earlier this week, the company told MT Newswires it complies "with all applicable laws and regulations where we operate and require companies who work with us to do the same."
