U.S. Stocks Rise on Earnings Strength -- Market Talk

1604 ET - U.S. stocks rise broadly following positive earnings reports from 3M, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Charter Communications and Mohawk Industries, while tech shares rebound, helping trim some of the sharp losses posted earlier this week. The Fed's preferred inflation gauge, the personal-consumption expenditures price index increased in line with expectations, leaving a September rate cut on the table. DJIA climbs 654 points, or 1.6%, to 40589, the S&P 500 rises 1.1% to 5459 and the Nasdaq gains 1% to 17357. For the week the DJIA gains 0.8%, its fourth straight weekly increase, while the S&P 500 loses 0.8% and the Nasdaq drops 2.1%. (patrick.sullivan@wsj.com)
