Deutsche Lufthansa said it is suspending flights to Tel Aviv and continuing the suspension of flights to Beirut in response to the current developments in the Middle East.

A spokesperson for the German carrier group said flights to the Lebanese capital would be canceled for an additional week up to and including Aug. 12.

At the same time, all passenger and cargo flights to Tel Aviv in neighboring Israel will be suspended, starting from Thursday evening up to and including Aug. 8.

The group had originally planned to resume flights to Lebanon on Aug. 5.

Air France too has extended its own suspension of flights between Paris and Beirut due to the security situation.

The French carrier's ban, effective since July 29, will last until and including Aug. 3, a spokesman said, adding that flights to and from Tel Aviv were operating normally.

The airlines' move comes amid a worsening of tensions in the region with Israel saying it killed a top military leader of Hezbollah in a Tuesday airstrike in Beirut. That strike was meant as retaliation against a suspected Hezbollah attack in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights that killed 12 young people on Saturday.
