China's trade surplus widened to USD 84.65 billion in July 2024 from USD 80.22 billion in the same period a year earlier but below the market expectations of USD 99 billion.  Exports from China expanded by 7.0% year-on-year in July 2024, moderating from an 8.6% rise in June and coming less than market forecasts of a 9.7% jump. This was the softest growth in outbound shipments since April, reaching their lowest level in three months at USD 300.56 billion. However, it was the fourth consecutive month of growth. Imports to China grew by 7.2% year-on-year to USD 215.91 billion in July 2024, exceeding market forecasts of 3.5% while swinging from June's 2.3% fall. It also pointed to the strongest rise in purchases since April. Investors now look ahead to domestic inflation figures later this week for further guidance.
