But beginning to invest internationally means looking at the world in a more nuanced way, especially when you consider nations such as Chile, a South American country located along the western shores of the continent. When you think of Chile, you probably think about Copper given how important that commodity is to economic growth. But there’s more to Chile than just that. If you’re intrigued by Chile because of its Copper exposure as a country, but also want broad diversification beyond that, then you may want to consider the iShares MSCI Chile ETF (BATS:ECH). This fund aims to mimic the performance of the MSCI Chile IMI 25/50 Index. If you buy into ECH, you own a sliver of all multiple companies that drive Chile’s economy, from banks to mining companies and every other company in between. Copper might bring you in the door, but the other sectors and growth opportunities should be equally as appealing. A Look At The Holdings One of ECH’s most appealing features is the diversity of its portfolio, reflecting Chile’s ability to punch above its weight across multiple industries. When we look at the top holdings, we see heavy concentration in the top 2 names in particular, and guess what? One is in the country’s Financials sector. ishares.com What do these companies do? Peer Comparison Although ECH is an excellent way to gain exposure to the Chilean equity market. It’s also the only fund out there that does from a pure-play perspective. There are no other Chile Funds like ECH. So for this section, I’d like to just compare ECH to the US S&P 500. Not really for a peer comparison, but just to see how the country’s markets are faring against a more recently volatile US average. When we look at the price ratio of ECH to the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), we find that, no surprise, ECH has underperformed. I will say though that the ratio may be bottoming here, suggesting a possibility that Chile outperforms. stockcharts.com Pros and Cons The good news is that ECH offers diversified exposure to a well-diversified nation. By buying shares in a single instrument, investors get access to a large swathe of the Chilean corporate sector. As such, ECH can deliver benefits over buying picks individually. There’s more to Chile than Copper, and this fund proves that out. But international investing, especially in an emerging market like Chile, entails certain risks. Political instability, currency fluctuations and regulatory changes can contribute to volatility and impact performance. The fund’s sector concentration in Financials and Materials may also increase its exposure to industry-specific risks. I think these are risks that are likely worth taking, but must be considered overall. Conclusion  If you like the look of a well-diversified, multi-sector emerging economy, the iShares MSCI Chile ETF might be the play for you. The fund offers exposure to a country that remains broadly diversified economically, with a healthy balance of natural resources, manufacturing, consumer services — and lots of banks. I’d rather invest here than in US large-cap Tech stocks, and think there’s a lot of room to run very long-term.
