The S&P 500 is getting a small makeover.

The tweaks to the benchmark index will take place before the market opens on Monday, Sept. 23. Among the key details:

-- Palantir Technologies $(PLTR)$, Dell Technologies $(DELL)$ and insurance company Erie Indemnity $(ERIE)$ will join the index, S&P Dow Jones Indices said in a late Friday statement.

-- They will replace American Airlines $(AAL)$, Etsy $(ETSY)$ and Bio-Rad Laboratories $(BIO)$, which will move to other indexes.

-- Shares rallied premarket Monday in anticipation of the rebalancing. Palantir stock rose more than 8%, while Dell and Erie Indemnity rose more than 5% and 2%, respectively.

-- The three stocks that are leaving were little changed.

Inclusion in the S&P 500 typically prompts buying by index-tracking funds, which can often send those stocks higher.
