With similar summer seasonality, the index also increased 1.0% M/M in seasonally adjusted terms in August. Shipments declined by 1.9% year-over-year in August, after a 1.1% drop in July. Those declines were the smallest in 18 months as goods demand continues to grow slowly, and slowing capacity additions reduce the pressure on for-hire shipments. The rates embedded in the two components of the Cass Freight Index declined 7.2% year-over-year in August, after a 5.2% drop in July. On a month-over-month basis, Cass Inferred Freight Rates fell 3.0%, reaching a new cycle low with the help of falling diesel prices. The Cass Freight Index represents monthly levels of shipment activity, in terms of volume of shipments and expenditures for freight shipments in North America. Cass Information Systems processes more than $28 billion in annual freight payables on behalf of its clients. The Cass Freight Index is based upon the domestic freight shipments of hundreds of Cass clients representing a broad spectrum of industries and methods of transportation including truck, rail, barge and air cargo. The Cass Freight Shipments Index spiked to an unprecedented level in 2022 before falling for almost two full years. Elsewhere in the trucking sector, North American Class 8 truck orders were reported by ACT Research to be down 16% year-over-year in August to 16,400 units to mark the third consecutive month that orders were lower than the prior year. The seasonal adjustment for the month puts the figure at 18,600 units, which was higher than the July tally. \"Class 8 orders remained at directionally and seasonally expected levels in August,\" stated ACT Senior Analyst Kenny Vieth. \"Historically, August is the last month of weak orders before the OEMs open their books to next year’s orders. As such, the month enjoys a large seasonal factor that boosts Class 8 orders nearly 12% above nominal levels,\" he observed. ACT Research's pointed to moderating expectations for truck order demand due to overcapacity in the U.S. tractor market, leading to generational lows in for-hire carrier profits and a continued lack of traction in freight rates. For the medium-duty market, the firm thinks the focus is on increasingly overextended U.S. consumers, the impact of elevated interest rates on discretionary spending, and weak RV demand.
