Lions Gate Entertainment (LGF.A, LGF.B) said Wednesday it is collaborating with Runway for a new artificial intelligence model with potential applications to the pre-production and post-production processes for its film and television content.
The company said Runway will create and train an AI model to generate cinematic video, helping enhance the work of filmmakers, directors and other creatives.
Financial details were not disclosed.
Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns expects to save "millions and millions of dollars" from using the new model, which the studio initially plans to use for pre-production work such as storyboarding, and eventually creating backgrounds and special effects, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.
Runway's tools aren't yet able to generate video or images for movies or TV, but the startup is working to provide more precise control to direct the cinematography of generated scenes in the next 12 months, the Journal said, citing Runway Chief Executive Cristobal Valenzuela.
