Caterpillar (CAT) said Tuesday it has introduced a new Dynamic Energy Transfer energy management system to address the mining industry's energy transition challenges.

The DET system is being developed at Caterpillar's Tucson Proving Ground and is designed to transfer energy to both diesel-electric and battery-electric mining trucks during their operations, the company said.

This system allows trucks to recharge their batteries while in motion, particularly on inclined roads, thereby improving machine uptime and overall performance, it added.

The DET system comprises integrated components, including a power module, an electrified rail system for energy transmission, and a machine system for transferring energy to trucks' powertrains, Caterpillar said.

Cat DET will integrate with Caterpillar's MineStar Command system, combining electrification and automation to improve efficiency, helping mining operations meet production targets while managing energy demands, the company added.

The company's shares were up nearly 2% in recent trading.
