Thomson Reuters (TRI) said Tuesday it will start a $1 per week subscription plan for its news website and app in October.
Reuters said digital subscriptions will initially be available in Canada, followed by several European countries and the US, with plans to expand worldwide.
Website and app users can access a "a limited number" of articles monthly before getting an offer to subscribe, Reuters said.
Warner Bros. Discovery's (WBD) CNN also said Tuesday it is beginning a $3.99 per month subscription plan in the US.
"Only after users consume a certain number of free articles will they be prompted to subscribe," wrote Alex MacCallum, CNN executive vice president of digital products and services, in an internal memo.
Some content, such as the CNN homepage and breaking news live stories, will remain free.
