SpartanNash Buys Regional Grocery Chain -- Market Talk

1236 ET - Food distributor SpartanNash is bolstering its supermarket presence by buying Fresh Encounter, a 49-store grocery chain in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Grand Rapids, Mich.-based SpartanNash runs about 150 supermarkets in nine states and has said it plans to expand deeper into the grocery retail business. Buying Fresh Encounter is the second grocery store acquisition SpartanNash has made this year. Fresh Encounter's grocery store brands include Community Markets, Remke Markets and Chief Markets. Terms of the deal were not disclosed and the deal is expected to close in late November. SpartanNash shares rise 1.9%. (patrick.thomas@wsj.com)
