The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Thursday announced a plan for Newark Liberty International Airport that includes building an international terminal to replace the current Terminal B and creating a more efficient taxiway network, among other updates.
The plan -- which the Port Authority said is on par with its $8 billion reconstruction of LaGuardia Airport and ongoing $19 billion transformation of John F. Kennedy International Airport -- will allow Newark Liberty to accommodate passenger growth.
The Port Authority expects to begin a two- to three-year planning process in 2025 for major elements of the redevelopment, including cost projections and timelines.
The plan calls to build a new international terminal to replace the current Terminal B, while also updating Terminal C. These updates would accommodate future passenger growth, leave room for further expansion as needed and complement Terminal A, which opened in January 2023 and could also be further expanded, the Port Authority said.
The airport's taxiway network would be improved, increasing parking capacity and flexibility for aircrafts. These improvements would additionally create redundancies to minimize delays during irregular operations and incorporate additional deicing facilities, allowing aircraft to push off from gates more quickly, according to the agency.
Additional updates include improving the airport's access by expanding passenger waiting, loading and unloading zones; simplifying access to the AirTrain; and increasing connectivity for cyclists, pedestrians and service vehicles.
Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said the agency will build upon its successes and lessons learned from its redevelopment of LaGuardia and JFK to create a more efficient, sustainable and modern Newark Liberty.
