Exchange-Traded Funds Mixed, US Equities Higher After Midday

Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were mixed with the latter being higher. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) climbed 0.7%.

US equity indexes were higher after midday trading Thursday, buoyed by strong September retail sales data and gains by large semiconductor companies.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) edged 0.2% higher and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) fractionally lower.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) rose 1.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were also advancing.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) gained 2%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) jumped 2.4%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) added 0.5%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 1.7%, and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) shed 1.5%.

Commodities

Crude oil dipped 0.1%; United States Oil Fund (USO) was 0.8% lower. Natural gas shed 0.4%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) dipped 0.9%.

Gold gained 0.6% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 0.6%. Silver dropped 0.6%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) lost 0.2%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) fell 0.5%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were also in the red.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was up 0.1%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) dipped 0.3%; iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were also lower. iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down less than 0.1%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) edged down 0.2% and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) dropped less than 0.1%, while iShares US Industrials (IYJ) added 0.1%.
