West Fraser Timber (WFG) reported a Q3 loss late Wednesday of $1.03 per diluted share, compared with earnings of $1.81 a share a year earlier.
A single analyst polled by Capital IQ expected a $0.89 loss.
Sales for the quarter ended Sept. 27 fell to $1.44 billion from $1.71 billion a year earlier.
Four analysts surveyed by Capital IQ expected $1.39 billion.
The company's shares were down nearly 4% in after-hours activity.
