Market Chatter: Beijing Fetes Xiaomi for Designing Smartphone Chip But Tech Company Stays Silent

MT Newswires Live10-22

The Beijing municipal government credited Xiaomi (HKG:1810) for designing China's first three-nanometer smartphone chip, but Xiaomi did not confirm the matter, the South China Morning Post reported Monday.

Xiaomi was said to have "taped out" the country's first three-nanometer-grade mobile chip, the report said, citing remarks by Beijing's chief economist at the municipal economy and information technology bureau recorded by state media. No other details were given.

A tape-out is the final stage of a chip's design process before being sent to mass production, the report said.

Chinese media picked up the story right away but the stories were removed from China's internet, and state media did not air a correction, the SCMP said.

Xiaomi did not respond to a comment from SCMP, the report said.
