Another way to think of that is that for every $1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn $0.02 in profit. \n What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth? \n So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or \"retain\", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features. \n ManpowerGroup's Earnings Growth And 1.7% ROE \n It is hard to argue that ManpowerGroup's ROE is much good in and of itself. Even compared to the average industry ROE of 16%, the company's ROE is quite dismal. For this reason, ManpowerGroup's five year net income decline of 16% is not surprising given its lower ROE. We believe that there also might be other aspects that are negatively influencing the company's earnings prospects. For instance, the company has a very high payout ratio, or is faced with competitive pressures. \n However, when we compared ManpowerGroup's growth with the industry we found that while the company's earnings have been shrinking, the industry has seen an earnings growth of 10% in the same period. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Is ManpowerGroup fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide. \n Is ManpowerGroup Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively? \n Looking at its three-year median payout ratio of 39% (or a retention ratio of 61%) which is pretty normal, ManpowerGroup's declining earnings is rather baffling as one would expect to see a fair bit of growth when a company is retaining a good portion of its profits. So there might be other factors at play here which could potentially be hampering growth. For example, the business has faced some headwinds. \n Additionally, ManpowerGroup has paid dividends over a period of at least ten years, which means that the company's management is determined to pay dividends even if it means little to no earnings growth. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company is expected to keep paying out approximately 45% of its profits over the next three years. Still, forecasts suggest that ManpowerGroup's future ROE will rise to 16% even though the the company's payout ratio is not expected to change by much. \n Conclusion \n Overall, we have mixed feelings about ManpowerGroup. While the company does have a high rate of reinvestment, the low ROE means that all that reinvestment is not reaping any benefit to its investors, and moreover, its having a negative impact on the earnings growth. Having said that, looking at current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings growth rate is expected to see a huge improvement.
