The U.S. government is awarding Corning up to $32 million to increase its output of specialized glass used in semiconductor manufacturing.
The Commerce Department on Friday said it signed a preliminary memorandum of terms with Corning for direct funding under the Chips Act, a nearly $53 billion government effort passed in 2022 to jump-start domestic semiconductor production.
The Commerce Department said the proposed funding would help Corning to increase production of high-purity fused silica and ultra-low-expansion glass at its Canton, N.Y., plant.
The Canton project is expected to create 130 manufacturing jobs and more than 175 construction jobs.
The Commerce Department last month said it was awarding Corning's majority-owned Hemlock Semiconductor unit up to $325 million under the Chips Act to expand its production capacity for semiconductor-grade polysilicon.
President-elect Donald Trump has said he would get rid of the Chips Act if elected.
