National Guard personnel in 20 states and the District of Columbia have been activated or are on standby to aid local authorities ahead of Tuesday's election, Pentagon officials said Monday.
Around 125 National Guardsmen in 10 states have been activated for election support so far, many of them cybersecurity experts, the officials said. Hundreds of Guard troops from nine other states and the District of Columbia have been put on alert but aren't yet activated. Nevada, Oregon and Washington have publicly said they have activated Guard troops. While National Guard forces have been activated before in previous elections, defense officials have privately expressed heightened concern this year because of the threat of election-related violence.
