Photo: Bilibili>\nWeng, an information systems graduate from Peking University in Beijing who earned her doctorate at Indiana University Bloomington, had worked at major US tech companies such as Facebook and Dropbox before joining the then-fledgling OpenAI as a research scientist in 2018, according to her LinkedIn profile.\nShe is one of the Chinese researchers helping to advance AI development at the start-up. Her nearly seven years at the company has included applied AI research roles. She was promoted in August to vice-president of research and safety, leading the team working on practical measures for ensuring AI safety, a topic of growing concern in the industry and among governments.\nIn a speech delivered in Chinese and streamed to Bilibili, Weng said that proper AI model training is vital to ensuring that AI is safe for humanity.\n\"Humans learn and improve as they grow, but they also experience growing pains. The same is true for AI. It can become narrow-minded due to data bias or be exploited maliciously due to adversarial attacks,\" Weng said. \"Through careful education, or AI security and alignment research, [humans] can make the AI growth process smoother\".\nShe did not discuss OpenAI or the US-China technology rivalry in her speech. Instead, she spoke generally about building the scaffolding for AI and the importance of diversified, comprehensive, and quality data for training.\nMainland media and institutions have been quick to heap praise on Chinese researchers at the hottest AI company in the world. Earlier this year, a high school in Wuhan praised a former student who worked on the text-to-video model Sora. It said Jing Li is \"shining on the international stage\". Ricky Wang Yu, another Chinese researcher on the team hailing from eastern Jiangsu province, received attention from local media for becoming a \"hot topic\" and attracting the \"attention of teenagers\".\nChinese scholars make up a growing proportion of AI researchers in the US, even as Chinese scientists have come under increasing political scrutiny in the country. Among top-tier AI researchers at US institutions in 2022, 38 per cent came from China, according to research from the think tank MacroPolo, up from 27 per cent in 2019.\nOpenAI does not publish demographic data on its workforce, but roughly a quarter of the more than 140 contributors to its latest o1 model appeared to have Chinese surnames, according to a list from the company.
