Bitcoin prices hit record highs of more than $82,000 on Monday and were last trading at more than $81,900, up more than 3% over the last 24 hours.

The price surge for the cryptocurrency followed the election of Donald Trump to the US presidency and expectations of a freer regulatory environment for digital assets.

Trump promised to make the US the "crypto capital of the planet," Reuters reported.
