Molson Coors' Underperformance Partly Due to Volume Share Decline -- Market Talk

Dow Jones11-09

1443 ET - Molson Coors' volume declines in 3Q can be partially chalked up to a pullback in beer demand, but the maker of Coors and Miller beers has also been underperforming its peers, Bernstein analysts say in a research note. Its overall market growth has lagged that of Bud Light maker Anheuser-Busch InBev, which is now growing in-line with expectations, and its current volume share is well off the peak hit after beer drinkers temporarily boycotted Bud Light last year, the analysts say. Weakness in the overall beer sector played a hand as well, prompting a debate about whether the softness is structural to the category or cyclical on a weak U.S. consumer, they say.
