Shares in Applied Materials $(AMAT)$ sank after the semiconductor-equipment company issued a lower-than-expected sales outlook, citing weaker demand trends in China.

-- The stock recently traded about 7.2% lower, putting Applied Materials on course for its lowest close in nine months, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

-- It was the worst performer in the S&P 500.

-- Peers such as ASML, KLA and Lam Research declined.
