Airline Setup Seen Constructive Amid Potential Spirit Bankruptcy -- Market Talk

Dow Jones11-13

1018 ET - Spirit Airlines' future after filing for bankruptcy is making the rest of the airline industry's backdrop increasingly clear as structural change is now taking effect, says Melius Research's Conor Cunningham in a research note. "The airline setup remains very constructive and the potential for earnings revisions is immense if pricing power ramps as it did during the '12-'14 cycle," the analyst says. He adds that focus on United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Alaska Air Group should continue as he views them as the winners in the current cycle. WSJ on Tuesday reported that Spirit is preparing to file for bankruptcy protection after merger talks with Frontier Airlines broke down. Shares of Spirit plummet 58% to $1.37.
