Sempra's (SRE) Southern California Gas unit and GKN Hydrogen said Thursday they are testing a new method of storing hydrogen in a solid state without compression.

The companies said they are working with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory with the goal of storing hydrogen using solid metal hydrides instead of traditional gas tanks.

The US Department of Energy is providing funding of $1.7 million, while SoCalGas is contributing $400,000 to the project, which is scheduled to continue until December 2026, the companies added.
