In light of that, when we looked at SEEK (ASX:SEK) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled. \n Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE) \n For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for SEEK, this is the formula: \n Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities) \n0.07 = AU$299m ÷ (AU$4.8b - AU$465m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).\n Therefore, SEEK has an ROCE of 7.0%. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 11% over the last five years. However it looks like SEEK might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments. \n On a related note, SEEK has decreased its current liabilities to 9.8% of total assets. That could partly explain why the ROCE has dropped. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE. \n The Bottom Line On SEEK's ROCE \n To conclude, we've found that SEEK is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. And investors may be recognizing these trends since the stock has only returned a total of 17% to shareholders over the last five years.
