Nomura Holdings on Wednesday said one of its former staffers has been formally charged with attempted murder following an incident at an elderly client's home in Hiroshima.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Japanese bank said the ex-staffer was formally charged by authorities in Japan's Hiroshima Prefecture on suspicion of robbery, attempted murder, and arson of an inhabited building.

The ex-Nomura employee is accused of drugging an elderly couple who were formerly his clients before attempting to steal a bag containing -Yen26 million ($170,000) in cash from them and then setting their house on fire, Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun reported.

The couple, who are in their 80s, managed to escape the house fire unharmed, having been drugged by the 29-year-old former staffer during a dinner party at their home in Hiroshima, Japan's sixth biggest city, Mainichi Shimbun reported.

Yusei Kajiwara, a 29-year former Normura employee from Hayama Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, was later arrested on suspicion of robbery, attempted murder, and arson of an inhabited building.

In a statement shortly after the arrest, Nomura said it had put in place new rules governing visits by Wealth Management employees to client's homes while also tightening its oversight of its staff members' movements.

"We remain committed to reinforcing our client-centric approach to create an environment where clients can feel at ease when working with us," Nomura said in a statement on Wednesday.

Nomura Holdings shares (JP:8604), listed in Tokyo, fell 1% on Wednesday having increased by 45% in 2024 so far.
