Nasdaq is set to launch options on BlackRock's bitcoin exchange-traded fund on Tuesday.
Crypto traders have been wondering when they can trade options on the so-called spot bitcoin ETFs since the funds launched in January. The answer came Monday via Nasdaq and the Options Clearing Corp.'s website.
Options are contracts that let investors buy or sell a stock or ETF at a specified price, by a particular expiration date. Part of their appeal is that they can be used to place leveraged bets on asset prices, allowing for massive gains or huge losses.
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust is the most successful out of the nearly a dozen bitcoin ETFs launched this year. The ETF, which has attracted about $29 billion in new money, now manages $43 billion in assets as the world's largest bitcoin fund.
