Amazon is borrowing a page from Spotify's playbook in an attempt to attract more audiobook listeners.
Amazon Music subscribers in the U.S., UK and Canada will now have access to Audible's entire catalog, with one free audiobook included in their membership each month. Spotify earlier this year began offering subscribers 15 hours of free audiobook listening each month.
The battle for dominance in audio streaming has heated up in recent years, with services that offer essentially identical music catalogs trying to differentiate their offerings, first with podcasts and now audiobooks. Music streaming services, which generally cost between $9.99 and $11.99 per month, are aiming to become a one-stop-shop for all things audio.
Both Spotify and Amazon have found that people who listen to other forms of audio, like podcasts, are more likely to stay a subscriber. Amazon-owned Audible, launched 27 years ago, has one million audiobooks; Spotify offers subscribers access to around 300,000 titles.
"Having all of Audible versus a catalog of some audiobooks-for me they're not even in the same ballpark," said Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games for Amazon.
Audible chief executive Bob Carrigan said he expects the Amazon Music offering will help reach more casual and first-time listeners.
