Its solutions are designed to improve energy efficiency, alleviate power capacity and other constraints, and ensure system resiliency.\nAMSC stock has surged since the company's fiscal second-quarter report on Oct. 30. The Ayer, Mass.-based company earned an adjusted 27 cents a share on sales of $54.5 million in the quarter ended Sept. 30. In the year-earlier period, AMSC broke even on sales of $34 million.\nSales rose 60% year over year in the September quarter, aided by the firm's recent acquisition of privately held NWL. NWL provides power supplies to industrial and military customers.\nOutlook Calls For More Growth\nFor its fiscal third quarter ending Dec. 31, AMSC predicts adjusted earnings of more than 5 cents a share on sales of $55 million to $60 million. In the year-earlier quarter, it earned 3 cents a share on sales of $39.4 million.\n\"We're really enthusiastic about where we are today,\" AMSC Chief Executive Daniel McGahn said on a conference call with analysts on Oct. 31.\nThe company ended the September quarter with a project backlog worth more than $300 million.\n\"We see significant macro tailwinds for power requirements driving our growth,\" McGahn said on the call. \"In the industrial space, we see demand from the reshoring of domestic industrial production and upgrading of existing industrial manufacturing.\"\nHe added, \"The growing power demand for AI data centers and the electrification of transportation has energized utilities and led to unprecedented power agreements. They're now even talking about bringing back power generation from nuclear power plants.\"\nAMSC Stock: Revenue Makeup\nAMSC operates in two business segments: Grid and Wind.\nThe Grid segment enables electric utilities and renewable energy project developers to connect, transmit and distribute power.\nThe Wind segment designs wind turbines and provides electrical control systems for them. The company also provides field service and spare parts to a global installed base of more than 17 gigawatts of wind power systems.\nAMSC's Grid business accounted for 84% of total revenue in fiscal 2023, which ended on March 31, down from 89% in the prior year. The Wind business accounted for 16% of total revenue in fiscal 2023 up from 11% in fiscal 2022.\nLast year, AMSC's Grid segment sales increased 29% to $122.1 million. Its Wind segment sales jumped nearly 108% to $23.6 million.\nMain Business Drivers\nAmerican Superconductor sees four key drivers for its business.\nFirst is the global demand for renewable energy such as wind and solar power. Second is the demand for gear for the electrification of transportation, especially electric vehicles and the supporting grid structure. Third is semiconductor manufacturing, which requires highly reliable and stable electrical power for its operations. And fourth is the electrification of the U.S. Navy, a major AMSC customer.\nAfter the company's earnings report, Craig-Hallum Capital Group analyst Eric Stine reiterated his buy rating on AMSC stock with a price target of 33.\nIn a client note, Stine said AMSC is \"hitting on all cylinders.\"\n\"We see AMSC's business as being in the sweet spot with strong macro tailwinds across its business,\" Stine said.\nThe company is \"ideally positioned\" with products and services across \"a wide range of areas that are top of mind,\" he said. Those areas include \"the increased use of renewables, the electrification shift, the expanding demand for power and high-quality power in areas such as semiconductors, mining and (reshored) manufacturing, and the need to strengthen/upgrade the grid.\"\nAMSC Stock Is A Recent Breakout\nAMSC stock is on the prestigious IBD 50 list.\n\nOn Nov. 8, AMSC stock broke out of a cup base at a buy point of 32.70, according to IBD MarketSurge charts.
