General Mills (GIS), which makes popular cereals like Cheerios, Cocoa Puffs, Lucky Charms, and Trix, could come under intense scrutiny from a Robert Kennedy, Jr-led Department of Health and Human Services. Kennedy is widely known to oppose anything other than natural food dyes in cereal.  “The first thing I’d do isn’t going to cost you anything because I’m just gonna tell the cereal companies: Take all the dyes out of their food,” Kennedy said last month. Measures to remove harmful food dyes, which are reportedly carcinogenic and can cause hyperactivity and allergic reactions in children, have been modestly successful through the years, but repeatedly met with fierce resistance from the food industry as “bright synthetic dyes turn unattractive mixtures of basic ingredients and food additives into alluring novelties,” an industry study found.  Food dyes, which are synthesized from petroleum, are used in everything from orange peels to Jell-O to salad dressing. Previous initiatives to remove dyes from cereal turned consumers off to the reformulated, bland-colored product without the brightly colored marshmallows and chocolate-colored puffs and were subsequently reintroduced.
