When I was a child in the 1960s, my grandfather referred to the change in his pocket as silver because those dimes and quarters had silver content. While governments worldwide continue to own gold as an integral part of monetary reserves and have increased their holdings, long ago, they abandoned silver because of the precious metals’ price volatility. In late 2024, gold monthly historical volatility was 9.43%, and silver’s was more than twice that level at 22.74%. Gold’s bull market began in 1999 at $252.50 per ounce, increasing more than tenfold to the latest October 2024 peak at over $2,800 per ounce. Meanwhile, silver reached a record high of over $50 per ounce in 1980 and reached just short of that in 2011. At around $30.85 in late November, silver has room to catch up with its precious sibling. Silver mining shares can provide upside leverage to silver prices, as they tend to outperform the metal on a percentage basis on the upside and underperform on the downside. SILJ outperformed silver from August through October 2024 The continuous COMEX silver futures contract rose to the highest price since late 2012 in October 2024.   Two-Year Weekly COMEX Silver Futures Chart (Barchart) The weekly chart shows the 32.3% rally from $26.505 to $35.07 per ounce from the August 2024 low to the October 2024 high.   Two-Year Weekly SILJ Chart (Barchart) Over the same period, the SILJ ETF rose 49.3% from $10.17 to $15.18 per share, outperforming the COMEX silver futures. SILJ provides leverage without time decay Silver mining shares leverage the silver price because the miners invest significant capital in silver exploration and production with conservative price estimates. When the volatile silver price rallies, it improves the earnings for these companies, creating outperformance. Meanwhile, leveraged ETF products tend to suffer from time decay as they own options and swaps that experience time decay. However, SILJ invests directly in junior silver mining shares, which do not decay, moving higher and lower with silver prices. Therefore, the leverage can cause underperformance during downside corrections, but rallies tend to deliver higher returns on a percentage basis. In October, gold rose to a record high of over $2,800 per ounce, a tenfold increase from the 1999 low. Gold’s bullish trend remains firmly intact in late 2024, despite its post-election correction to below the $2,600 per ounce level.  The U.S. debt at over the $36 trillion level weighs on the U.S. dollar’s value, which is bullish for hard currencies, including gold and silver. Global silver fundamentals point to a global silver structural deficit, as highlighted in the June 4, 2024, Seeking Alpha article on silver and the SILJ ETF. The geopolitical landscape remains highly turbulent, and the U.S. electorate is divided despite the 2024 election results. Markets reflect the economic and geopolitical landscapes, which will likely remain volatile over the coming months and years.   The current correction in silver, which has taken its price from over $35 to below $31 per ounce, could be another golden buying opportunity, no pun intended, for the coming months and years.
