Canadian Consumption Looks to Be Improving Fast -- Market Talk

Dow Jones11-22 22:50

0950 ET - A strong increase in Canadian retail sales volumes in September means growth of around 5% annualized for 3Q and suggests household consumption growth picked up strongly, Capital Economics' Thomas Ryan says. The economist says sales volumes are on a clear upward trajectory, and the preliminary estimate for October hints that sales got off to a strong start in 4Q. Ryan says recent improvements in consumer confidence suggests the strength will continue for the rest of the year, with early 2025 set to benefit from the government's announced tax holiday and rebate for households.
