Huawei aims to start mass production of its latest artificial intelligence chip by the first quarter of 2025 despite US restrictions, Reuters reported Thursday, citing two people familiar with the matter.
The Chinese telecommunications company has already sent out samples of its Ascend 910C chip to potential clients and began taking orders, the report said, citing the sources.
Huawei's newest chip is seen to take on Nvidia's products, the report said.
US restrictions on Huawei have impeded its ability to achieve yields of its AI chips high enough for commercial sustainability, the report said.
Semiconductor Manufacturing International (HKG:0981, SHA:688981) is making the chips, but a lack of lithography equipment has limited yields to around 20%, Reuters said, citing the sources.
Commercial viability requires a yield of 70%, the report said.
