Thus, you can purchase Westlake's shares before the 26th of November in order to receive the dividend, which the company will pay on the 12th of December.   The company's upcoming dividend is US$0.525 a share, following on from the last 12 months, when the company distributed a total of US$2.10 per share to shareholders.  Looking at the last 12 months of distributions, Westlake has a trailing yield of approximately 1.6% on its current stock price of US$129.16.    Dividends are an important source of income to many shareholders, but the health of the business is crucial to maintaining those dividends.  As a result, readers should always check whether Westlake has been able to grow its dividends, or if the dividend might be cut. When earnings decline, dividend companies become much harder to analyse and own safely.   If earnings fall far enough, the company could be forced to cut its dividend.     Westlake's earnings per share have plummeted approximately 37% a year over the previous five years.       Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth.     Since the start of our data, 10 years ago, Westlake has lifted its dividend by approximately 17% a year on average.       The only way to pay higher dividends when earnings are shrinking is either to pay out a larger percentage of profits, spend cash from the balance sheet, or borrow the money.  Westlake is already paying out 271% of its profits, and with shrinking earnings we think it's unlikely that this dividend will grow quickly in the future.     The Bottom Line  From a dividend perspective, should investors buy or avoid Westlake?      It's never fun to see a company's earnings per share in retreat.  Worse, Westlake's paying out a majority of its earnings and more than half its free cash flow. Positive cash flows are good news but it's not a good combination.        It's not an attractive combination from a dividend perspective, and we're inclined to pass on this one for the time being.
