(OTCPK:HYMTF) stock, since the company has done relatively little to promote its shares in western equity markets. Awareness of the South Korean automaker’s vehicle models, by contrast, have grown steadily since the 1980s, when Hyundai began exporting a small low-priced Excel compact to the U.S. and elsewhere. A decade later management changed direction, concluding that small, inexpensive economy models would never make a dent against incumbents like Toyota and Honda – and to be successful globally the automaker had to be successful in the U.S. Quality, design, engineering, and reliability have improved steadily. Today, consumers shop more than a dozen Hyundai models – and those of its affiliate Kia – against those from Toyota (TM), Honda (HMC) and Nissan (OTCPK:NSANY). The automaker’s Genesis luxury franchise, after initial missteps appointing dealers, has been steadily finding its footing as a standalone niche brand in the U.S. since 2015, filching share from competitors like Lexus and even Mercedes-Benz. Electric aspirations Hyundai has committed to transforming Genesis into an all-BEV franchise by 2030, which may not – depending on consumer demand – be achievable on that timeline. But the pledge does reflect the automaker’s determination to be ready as improving battery technology and charging infrastructure lead to an eventual mainstream embrace of BEVs. A key step has been development of its Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which serves as the basis for all Hyundai BEV models. Ioniq 9 3-row SUV (Hyundai Motor)So far, Hyundai has introduced six BEVs based on E-GMP. The seventh is Ioniq 9, a large SUV whose formal debut takes place today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. I had a brief look at Ioniq 9 earlier this month, along with a review of its features and performance specifications. The exterior is quite modern, eye catching and distinctive, in line with the boxy futuristic them that is making its way throughout Hyundai’s model lineup. Ioniq 9 interior (Hyundai Motor)As with other Hyundai and Kia BEVs, the platform supports 800V charging, which promotes fast charging speeds (10% to 80% capacity in 24 minutes under ideal conditions) as well as the ability to power external devices such as appliances or other vehicles. Three rows can seat up to seven passengers. The 110.3 kWh battery delivers a projected driving range, depending on configuration, of up to 335 miles. The advanced electronic systems and digital wireless features enable over-the-air updates (OTA). Pricing hasn’t been announced. Based on the pricing of Kia EV9, a similar large SUV, Ioniq 9 should start at about $57,000 and cost as much as about $80,000. As has become clear over the past year, consumer demand in the U.S. and in other industrialized markets has fallen short of forecasts. It continues to grow, though at a slower pace than projected, meaning that automakers are redirecting resources to production of conventional fossil-fuel vehicles, as well as gas-electric hybrids. Top-tier producer Hyundai Motor's global vehicle sales in 2023 reached 6.5 million units, reflecting a 6.9% year-over-year growth, placing it third among the largest automakers worldwide. For 2024, the company has set a target of 6.8 million vehicles, focusing on SUVs, luxury vehicles, and BEVs. The automaker declines to break out BEV sales separately. At the company’s 2024 Investor Day in late August, Hyundai disclosed a plan to introduce extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) in the U.S. starting in 2026 – and also in China. EREVs are equipped with efficient gasoline engines that charge an onboard battery that powers a motor that in turn drives the wheels. Estimated range for the system – a bridge technology to BEVs – is roughly 550 miles. In spite of a weaker September, Hyundai’s U.S. operations managed a retail record. \"We set an all-time retail sales record in the third quarter thanks to strong demand for our IONIQ 5 and hybrid models along with the hard work of our retail partners,\" said Randy Parker, CEO, Hyundai Motor America. Sales of BEV models were up for the first nine months of 2024, though down for the quarter. Hyundai shortly expects to begin production of BEV models at its new METAPLANT factory in Bryan County, Ga. In October, the automaker announced that its Ioniq 5 BEV will be used by Google’s Waymo robotaxi subsidiary in its operations, though numbers and details were sketchy. Waymo has been operating robotaxis in San Francisco and has plans to expand operations – a development that will add to Hyundai’s vehicle sales. The automaker will also assemble Ioniq 9 at its METAPLANT, which should raise the likelihood of its qualification for federal and state BEV subsidies to survive the next four years. President-elect Trump has said he will end federal BEV subsidies. Lobbying for favorable governmental treatment of BEVs – and especially those built in the U.S. – will likely be a priority for Hyundai Motor’s newly promoted chief executive, Jose Munoz. Munoz, formerly a Nissan executive, joined Hyundai in 2019 amid the fallout following the arrest of his boss at Nissan, Carlos Ghosn. Munoz is the first non-Korean to occupy the CEO post at Hyundai, having been consequential to the growth of sales in the U.S. and the transition to electrification. Uncovered and overlooked With a P/E (TTM) of just under 4 and a dividend yield of 9.62%, Hyundai ADRs are a fairly safe bet for investors with a long-term perspective. Significantly, no Wall Street analyst follows the stock – unusual for a public company of its size. Like every other incumbent, Hyundai faces rising competition from Chinese automakers such as BYD (OTCPK:BYDDY) – which are poised to capture market share in less industrialized countries, the European Union and eventually in the U.S. HYMLF stock chart (Seeking Alpha)Hence, the stock hasn’t moved much in price over the past decade. It’s hard to imagine that the stock’s low – almost invisible – profile hasn’t been the result of a deliberate policy, possibly connected to historic ownership of the Chung family, which controls the company and whose scion, E.S. Chung, serves as chairman. Hyundai's thinking could change. The automaker recently launched an IPO on the Indian stock market, raising $3.3 billion. Should Hyundai’s sales continue to increase, and its profile expands globally, the automaker’s management – guided by the Chung family – may decide to become more proactive toward western investors, potentially improving return. For the moment, potential risks look well hedged by the generous dividend and make the stock a relatively safe Buy.
