The US Supreme Court is considering reviewing a major copyright dispute involving Sony Group (TYO:6758) and other entertainment companies against Cox Communications, according to Bloomberg News on Monday.
These companies accuse Cox of neglecting to terminate accounts of users illegally downloading music, the report said.
In 2019, a Virginia jury found Cox liable for enabling over 10,000 illegal downloads, awarding nearly $100,000 per infringement, said the news wire.
However, a federal appeals court later overturned part of the $1 billion verdict, prompting both parties to seek Supreme Court intervention, the report said.
The case numbers are Cox Communications v. Sony Music Entertainment, 24-171, and Sony Music Entertainment v. Cox Communications, 24-181, reported Bloomberg News.
