Health care stocks were mixed Wednesday afternoon, with the NYSE Health Care Index shedding 0.1% and the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) fractionally higher.
The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) rose 0.5%.
In corporate news, UnitedHealth (UNH) said Wednesday that Brian Thompson, chief executive of its UnitedHealthcare unit, has died. Thompson was shot and killed Wednesday morning in Manhattan in what New York police are describing as a possible targeted attack, according to multiple news reports. UnitedHealth shares were rising 0.6%.
Cross Country Healthcare (CCRN) and Aya Healthcare said Wednesday they signed an agreement under which Aya will buy Cross Country for $18.61 per share in cash for about $615 million in deal value. Cross Country shares surged past 62%.
Windtree Therapeutics (WINT) said Wednesday it has tapped New Growth Advisors as a strategic adviser to lead a potential transaction process for its cardiovascular portfolio. Windtree shares plunged more than 16%.
