Ballard Power Systems has signed a long-term deal to supply Canadian Pacific Kansas City with nearly 100 fuel cell engines to be used in the North American freight rail market.
The Canadian hydrogen fuel cell maker said Thursday that it expects to deliver all 98 engines to the railroad company in 2025, each with a nameplate of 200 kilowatt of power, totaling about 20 megawatts of fuel cell power.
The current deal builds on their past partnership which began in 2021 where Ballard provided CPKC with 10 megawatts of fuel cell engines to date.
The fuel cell engines purchased from Ballard will support the expansion of CPKC's hydrogen locomotive program, which currently uses three hydrogen locomotives in its operations.
