In a wide-ranging interview for The Circuit with Emily Chang, Curry discussed his ambitions on and off the court.It was about four years into his pro career, as he ascended to All-Star status in his early days on the Golden State Warriors, that Curry began to see that basketball was creating unforeseen opportunities.“You realize doors that are opening based off of what you’re doing on the basketball court,” and this meant trying to find ways to manage it all, Curry says. “Because obviously it matters who you go into business with.”Curry’s biggest business decision came in 2013 when he left Nike Inc., the world’s largest sportswear company, to sign an endorsement deal with rival Under Armour Inc., which was just starting a basketball business. He soon released his first signature shoe, the Curry 1.Last March, he signed a long-term contract extension with Under Armour that’ll carry into his retirement from basketball. Financial terms weren’t disclosed, but he was granted $75 million in stock as part of the package, according to regulatory filings. The 12th iteration of his sneaker hit stores in October.What if he’d stayed with Nike? Curry says he has no regrets.“There’s a reason I’m not there. I’ve always been an underdog. It was kind of my mentality,” says Curry. “The fact that I took a chance and wanted to create something on my own, and sitting where I am right now, that speaks way more than saying what could have been with Nike.”Curry’s portfolio now spans several industries. He has a bourbon label called Gentleman’s Cut and a production company, Unanimous Media, which created shows such as the ABC miniature golf series Holey Moley. His venture capital firm, Penny Jar Capital, has made a wide range of investments, spanning the metaverse to food halls.Not all of Curry’s business forays have worked out, though. He was one of many celebrities and athletes, including Tom Brady, Shaquille O’Neal, Shohei Ohtani and Naomi Osaka, involved with FTX, the cryptocurrency exchange that collapsed in 2022 amid a fraud scheme perpetrated by founder Sam Bankman-Fried. Curry was a paid brand ambassador for FTX and appeared in its advertisements. He also held an equity stake.“It went crazy sideways,” says Curry. “I think it was a shock to a lot of people, not just me, the way it turned out. You take that one on the chin and keep moving.”For now, it’s back to his other pursuits. Golf has been a steadily growing obsession for Curry, who’s expanded his Under Armour line into the sport and now finds himself at the course hitting balls for fun or in charity tournaments.
